Prop Betting Explained for Canadians

Prop bets — short for proposition bets — let you wager on things that happen inside a game rather than just who wins. From “Connor McDavid to score anytime” to a team’s total goals or a novelty coin-toss result, props are one of the fastest-growing corners of the Canadian betting market. This guide breaks down player props, team props, and novelty markets across our biggest sports, and shows you where the real value hides.

What Is a Prop Bet?

A prop bet is a wager on an outcome within a game that isn’t tied directly to the final score or the winner. Instead of betting the moneyline or spread, you’re betting on a specific statistical event.

There are three broad categories:

  • Player props — an individual’s performance (goals, points, passing yards, strikeouts).
  • Team props — a team’s collective output (total goals, first to score, race to X points).
  • Novelty props — fun or event-specific markets (coin toss, first scoring method, halftime performers at big events).

Most props are offered as Over/Under on a set line, or as Yes/No markets (“Anytime goalscorer: Yes”), each with its own odds. Because sportsbooks price hundreds of these markets per game, they’re often less sharply priced than the main lines — which is exactly where informed bettors find an edge.

The Canadian Context

Single-game betting became legal nationwide in August 2021 under Bill C-218, which dramatically expanded prop availability across the country. Regulation, however, is provincial:

  • Ontario runs a competitive, regulated market through AGCO and iGaming Ontario (since April 2022), where only registered operators may legally offer bets. See our Ontario hub for the current licensed lineup.
  • Other provinces generally offer betting through government-run platforms (PROLINE+ in Ontario’s lottery channel, PlayNow in BC/MB/SK, Espacejeux in Quebec, etc.).
  • Most provinces require players to be 19+, though Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec allow betting at 18+.

Market depth varies by operator, so it’s worth comparing what’s on offer. Our betting sites comparison ranks books partly on how deep their prop menus run.

🏒 NHL Props

Hockey props are hugely popular with Canadian bettors.

Player props

  • Anytime Goalscorer (Yes/No) — the flagship market; also First and Last goalscorer.
  • Shots on Goal Over/Under.
  • Points (goals + assists) and Assists Over/Under.
  • Goalie Saves Over/Under and goalie to record a win.
  • Power-play points and player to record a hat trick.

Team props

  • Team Total Goals Over/Under.
  • Both teams to score a set number of goals.
  • Team to score in every period and first team to score.
  • Race to X goals.

🏈 NFL Props

Football offers arguably the deepest prop menus of any sport.

Player props

  • Passing Yards / TDs / Completions / Interceptions for quarterbacks.
  • Rushing Yards / Attempts and Receiving Yards / Receptions for skill players.
  • Anytime Touchdown Scorer, First TD Scorer, and longest reception/rush.
  • Kicker points and field goals made.

Team props

  • Team Total Points Over/Under.
  • First team to score and team to score first TD.
  • Total sacks / turnovers and race to X points.

The CFL carries a slimmer version of the same menu — worth checking during the summer months when it has the Canadian gridiron spotlight.

🏀 NBA Props

Player props

  • Points, Rebounds, and Assists Over/Under — the core three.
  • Combos like Points + Rebounds + Assists (PRA), Pts+Reb, Pts+Ast.
  • Threes made, Steals, Blocks, Turnovers.
  • Double-double / Triple-double (Yes/No) and first basket scorer.

Team props

  • Team Total Points Over/Under.
  • Winning margin and race to X points.
  • Highest-scoring quarter or half.

⚾ MLB Props

Player props

  • Hits, Total Bases, Home Run (Yes/No), RBIs, and Runs scored.
  • Pitcher Strikeouts Over/Under — one of the most popular baseball markets.
  • Pitcher outs recorded, earned runs allowed, and to record a win.

Team props

  • Team Total Runs Over/Under.
  • First team to score and team to score in the first inning.
  • Race to X runs.

⚽ Soccer & UFC Props

Soccer props include anytime/first goalscorer, shots on target, cards (player to be booked), corners, and both teams to score. With the World Cup 2026 coming to North America — including matches in Toronto and Vancouver — expect an explosion of tournament-specific props.

UFC offers method of victory (KO/TKO, submission, decision), round betting, fight to go the distance (Yes/No), and total rounds Over/Under.

Novelty Props

Reserved mostly for marquee events like the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup Final, novelty props cover the coin toss, first scoring method, whether there will be overtime, and other one-off markets. They’re entertainment-first bets — fun, but rarely where a serious edge lives.

How to Find Value in Props

Props reward preparation more than main-line betting because books can’t price every market perfectly. Focus your effort here:

  • Line shop across books. A player’s points line might differ by half a point (or more) between operators. Small differences compound over time. Our payment methods guide helps you fund multiple accounts efficiently via Interac e-Transfer.
  • Target soft, low-volume markets. Star-player headline props are sharp; secondary players’ rebound or shots lines are often looser.
  • Do the matchup work. A pitcher facing a high-strikeout lineup, a receiver against a weak secondary, a forward on a hot power play — these context clues beat gut feel.
  • Factor in usage and role changes. Injuries elsewhere in a lineup inflate a player’s opportunity. Books don’t always adjust instantly.
  • Mind the vig on Yes/No props. Anytime scorer and touchdown markets often carry a heavy hold — shop the price.
  • Track lineup and weather news. A late scratch or windy football forecast can turn a bad line into a great one.

For a broader strategic foundation, see our betting guides, and review how we assess operators in our review methodology.

Props are where discipline and homework pay off most. Bet the markets you understand, shop your lines, and treat every prop as an independent decision rather than a coin-flip add-on.

Frequently asked questions

Are prop bets legal in Canada?+

Yes. Since Bill C-218 legalized single-game betting in August 2021, prop markets are widely available across Canada. Regulation is provincial, so your options depend on where you live: Ontario has a competitive regulated market through AGCO and iGaming Ontario, while other provinces offer betting through government platforms like PlayNow (BC/MB/SK), PROLINE+ (Ontario lottery) and Espacejeux (Quebec).

What's the difference between player props and team props?+

Player props are wagers on an individual's performance, such as Connor McDavid to score anytime, a QB's passing yards, or a pitcher's strikeouts. Team props are bets on a team's collective output, like total goals, first team to score, or a race to a set number of points. Both are usually offered as Over/Under or Yes/No markets.

Why do props sometimes offer better value than the moneyline?+

Sportsbooks price hundreds of prop markets per game, so individual props tend to be less sharply priced than main lines like the moneyline or spread. Bettors who follow specific players, injury news, and matchups closely can find spots where the posted line lags behind reality, creating an edge.

Do all Canadian sportsbooks offer the same prop markets?+

No. Market depth varies significantly by operator, especially for niche sports and same-game parlays. It pays to compare books before betting a specific prop, since one site may list anytime goalscorer, shots on goal and power-play points while another offers only the basics.
